Corrigans Beach

The early settlers would probably be amazed at the developments in and around Corrigans Beach today. The northern end of the beach, accessed directly off Beach Road, is flanked by playing fields, an animal park, municipal buildings, boat club and tennis courts.

The northern headland is home to the Coastal Patrol Rescue building and two concrete boat ramps, located safely behind the Hanging Rock breakwall – a good spot for fishing. Dogs are allowed in this area, but not near the holiday parks to the south.

Past the large holiday park that occupies most of the middle area of the 2 kilometre-long beach is Corrigans Beach Reserve – a large grassy foreshore area with jet-ski launch area and full amenities. These include a choice of wood or gas barbecues, children’s playground and toilets – all perfectly placed for a family picnic overlooking the beach.

Don’t worry if you’ve forgotten anything for your day out – just across the road is the Batehaven shopping centre with a good array of shops including takeaways, a grocery store, newsagent and post office.

With plenty of space on and off the beach, relatively calm, safe waters, excellent family amenities and shops nearby, Corrigans Beach is definitely a family destination the original Corrigan family would be very proud of.Corri

Apart from a few sandy patches around the Clyde River bridge, Surfside Beach is the most westerly beach on the northern shore of Batemans Bay.

Surfside Beach

Access is from the Princes Highway – turn onto Wharf Road at the northern end of the bridge, follow it around to Myamba Parade and look for the beach carpark near the small shopping centre. There are several walkways that lead to the beach along the length of Myamba Parade. The beach, decorated with a bright garland of flowers, is broken by a small headland that leads to Cullendulla Reserve and enjoys a very protected position behind Square Head. Taking advantage of this secure location are many water craft, moored snugly just offshore. Calm shallow water for many metres and gentle, lapping waves also make Surfside Beach an ideal place for children. There are however, no children’s play equipment and the beach is short on public amenities but a handy shopping centre is just a short walk across the road. Here you can buy just about anything from oysters to ice cream.

For those who prefer longer walks, there is an easy walking track that takes you into the Cullendulla Creek Nature Reserve. The entrance can be found just past the carpark at the eastern end of the beach. The track leads you over the small headland and on to a small beach in the reserve, terminating at the mouth of the Cullendulla Creek. From here you realise how close you are to nature, yet still so close to town.

At over 2 kilometres, Long Beach is, in fact, the longest beach on Batemans Bay. A south-east facing beach, Long Beach is positioned between the prominent Square Head to the west and the Chain Bay headland to the east.

Long Beach

Long Beach is far enough into the bay to be partially protected from the full force of the Pacific Ocean.
Taking advantage of this peaceful location is the growing residential area of the same name – spaced out along nearly the entire length of the beach and venturing some distance back towards the Princes Highway.

With the relatively safe waters of Batemans Bay immediately in front of you, it’s easy to see why a strong boating community has developed here. A natural boat ramp at the eastern end sits in the shadow of tall Norfolk Island pines and a small headland – giving easy access to the bay.

Access to the western end of the beach is not quite so easy. Apart from taking a long walk from the small carpark off Bay Road, access is limited to several walkways that come off the road running parallel to the beach. The walkways traverse a wider than usual foreshore bush reserve.

The pleasing result is that once on the beach you will likely be in total isolation – save for the occasional horse or dog – allowed on a time share basis at this end of the beach only. Still, there’s plenty of room for everyone, it’s a long beach!

Maloneys Beach

Named after the Maloney family who settled in the area around 1885, the kilometre-long beach and cluster of homes around it, is adjacent to the Murramarang National Park. Walk in to the park from the eastern end of the beach or look for the track that runs off the eastern end of Maloneys Drive.

The beach environs are ideal for family outings with a wide grassy reserve, toilets, boat ramp, free electric barbecues and covered picnic area. There is also plenty of car parking at the eastern end and a natural boat ramp.

The western end of the beach features a protected cove and string of small rockpools – perfect for children to explore. The colourful rock ledges are teeming with sea creatures that will surprise and delight everyone – you may even catch a glimpse of the local dolphin pod as it travels past.

If you want to bring your own animals for a romp on the beach, take note that dogs are prohibited from the Hibiscus Close turnoff to the end of the beach. Elsewhere a council time share use policy is in effect, check the local signage for details.

If you’ve found your way through Durras to the Cookies Beach southern carpark, then you’re also in the carpark for Mill Beach. Unless of course you’re staying at the Murramarang Resort – possibly one of the most popular eco-tourist destinations in the Eurobodalla.

The fully-equipped resort is discreetly hidden from view and is contained within the borders of theMurramarang National Park. In 1986 the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) leased the area for the resort for a period of 45 years.

Mill Beach

The southern end of Mill Beach has visible signs of its past – from the 1870s to 1929 a timber mill was located on the headland. Timber was felled from surrounding forests and pulled by horse teams or ferried on punts to the mill.

A steam winch pulled the timber to the Wasp Head Mill where it was cut and then hauled out to ships in the bay. The steam boiler is about all that remains of this bygone era.

From the small, steeply inclined beach all this activity is long forgotten, replaced by families escaping the city to the peace and tranquility of the Murramarang National Park. Indeed the park surrounding Mill Beach has a lot to offer.

Walk around the rather flat southern rock platform to get a good view of xe “Wasp Island”Wasp Island, an important nesting sight for little penguins, white-faced storm petrels, and shearwaters.
The headland is a good place to throw in a line, but watch the tides and the occasional large wave that can catch you off guard.

For the energetic, another walking track, one leading around Wobbegong Bay to Wasp Head and another towards Emily Miller Beach, can be picked up from just behind the Murramarang Resort.

Cookies Beach

Cookies Beach, and in fact all of Durras, retains a unique Australian natural bush setting due to the wide bushland corridor that separates the beach from the village.

The village at South Durras also has a unique Australian holiday feel, no doubt due in part to the humble fibro cottages still preserved there.

The beach is very Australian too, right down to the basking kangaroos usually found in the small park and barbecue area at the southern end.

There are some basic amenities found in the park, including toilets, but note that there is no fresh water available, the bore water must be boiled before use. There is however, a General Store in the village that can supply most of your holiday needs.

The beach, protected from southerlies by Mill Point and Wasp Island, is only about 500 metres long yet is reasonably wide so there is plenty of room to spread out for a day at the beach.

The southern end of the beach, near the Murramarang Resort, has a concrete boat ramp that is reached via a circular route through the village along Banyandah Street, just follow the signs to the resort and turn left into the large carpark just before reaching the resort entrance.

Take a left turn onto Durras Lake Road just before the creek to head towards the village and the beach.

Durras Beach

Durras Beach, known also as Durras Lake Beach, is a wide, east-facing beach that joins Durras North Beach via a sandbar across the entrance to Durras Lake.

Durras Lake village is quietly tucked away behind a native parkland strip and the beach is hidden by low sand dunes. Well-equipped caravan parks are located at both ends of the beach offering all amenities, swimming pool, tennis court, showers and barbecues. The beach however, is not patrolled and has few amenities, so make sure you come prepared.

If you’ve come to surf then you’ll be very happy at Durras Beach. There are good surf breaks along the entire length of the beach and you may even be joined on the waves by the local pod of dolphins.

There are plenty of places to explore on foot too, the dune walk across to North Durras takes you past the caravan park through scrub to Durras Lake and Durras North Beach. Keep an eye out for nesting Hooded Plover birds in this area and note that dogs are not allowed.

The other interesting walk is around the headland at the southern end of the beach. Erosion has produced some spectacular patterns in the sandstone ledge and there are a multitude of unusual rockpools and crevices to explore.
